Frequently asked questions

How is Areola Tattoo done?

A topical anesthetic is applied to keep the patient comfortable however; most patients with breast reconstruction have little or no sensation. We will start by mapping out the placement and the parameters of the areola. I draw it on so you can see exactly how it will look so there are no surprises. I will then customize a pigment to match your natural coloring. I always include my patients in choosing the size, shape, placement and color for their procedure. The entire process can take approximately 1 to 2 hours. To achieve a natural looking areola the outer edge will be done in a manner to create a soft edge that appears to emerge from the breast mound, NOT a bull’s eye. The inner coloring of the areola gets a mottled effect to mimic the natural variation of color. With Areola complex we can create a 3 dimensional effect for the nipple by using varying shades of light and dark, so for women who opted to not have nipple reconstruction they can still look like they have one without the actual projection. A totally NATURAL look is the goal.

What is the difference between Nipple tattooing and Nipple grafting Surgery?

Why go through another painful surgical procedure that may require more anesthesia and downtime when you can have the “Illusion of Protrusion” that appears totally natural and usually involves minimal discomfort. Some associated risks with undergoing nipple reconstruction/surgery are infection and the chance that the nipple may become necrotic or flatten out.

What should I look for when choosing a cosmetic professional for Areola Tattoos?

It is important to find a permanent cosmetic professional who is trained in Areola Complex and 3 dimensional Nipple tattooing. A breast surgeon or nurse may also perform this procedure but is not as skilled in performing these complex medical tattoos as someone who is specifically trained and specializes in paramedical tattooing and is an artist by nature. Creating a new areola or a 3 dimensional looking nipple, “the illusion of protrusion” that appears totally natural, takes and eye for color, artistic ability and proper training. I take into consideration the natural position of the Areola in relation to the post surgical outcome. Proper shading and pigment selection to match your skin tone, creating symmetry and the ability to create an areola that emerges from the breast mound ( not a “bulls eye”) is my goal to giving you a result that is remarkably natural looking! Permanent Areola & nipple tattooing is the “finishing touch" to the difficult journey of breast reconstruction. Most insurance companies will reimburse you for this procedure following breast reconstruction due to breast cancer.
